While actors, sets, and lighting often steal the spotlight, stage curtains take charge in setting the tone, creating anticipation, and adding a touch of mystique to the entire theatrical experience. Stage curtains have seamlessly integrated themselves into the performing arts for centuries, adorning a diverse array of venues where live events and presentations come to life. From school stages to churches, theatres to town halls, multipurpose halls to entertainment centres, apartment function areas to cinemas, stage curtains find their place. Regardless of the venue, these curtains play a pivotal role in enhancing the visual impact of performances and immersing the audience in a captivating environment.
What fabrics to use?
When considering curtains, you have a variety of fabric options to choose from. One popular choice is velvet, which offers a wide range of colours and comes in different weights measured in GSM (grams per square meter). Velvet curtains are commonly used in theatrical settings due to their luxurious appearance. They add elegance and richness to the stage, creating a visually captivating backdrop. Additionally, velvet’s acoustic properties enhance sound quality during performances.
Another fabric option for stage curtains is wool. Wool curtains are renowned for their durability and cost-effectiveness. They provide strength and resilience, making them suitable for venues with high traffic or frequent use. Wool fabrics can withstand wear and tear over time, ensuring longevity and excellent value for your investment.

Should you use lining on your stage curtains?
To enhance curtains, consider lining their interiors with our recommended black blockout fabric. This proactive measure offers multiple benefits. It protects and increases the curtain’s durability while improving acoustics and appearance. Lining ensures a smooth hang and extends the lifespan, making it particularly crucial for high-traffic areas like school stages or town halls.

Stage Backdrops:
Stage backdrops typically match the front curtains in material and colour, ensuring visual consistency and a cohesive stage design. However, an alternative option for backdrops is a cyclorama. Ideal for schools and halls, a cyclorama serves as a screen that offers versatility. It can be used as a projection surface, enabling dynamic visuals and immersive experiences during performances. Whether you choose a traditional curtain or a cyclorama, selecting the right backdrop is crucial for creating an impactful stage setting.
Fullness for your stage curtains:
To achieve a professional and polished look in stage curtains, we highly recommend aiming for 80% fullness. This level of fullness certainly creates an elegant and sophisticated appearance that enhances the overall aesthetic of the curtains. When the fabric gathers and drapes generously across the width, the curtains exude a visually captivating presence on the stage. Whether you’re preparing for a theatrical production or a formal event, striving for 80% fullness ensures that your curtains possess a refined and high-quality appeal, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
