In one of our previous articles, we talked about fire retarding options for theatre fabrics in order to obtain additional safety as well as to comply to the safety regulations of the Building Code of Australia (BCA). Specifically, the theatre fabrics or curtains should pass the standard fire retarding requirement for a class 9b building used as a place of public entertainment. Nowadays, there are already fire resistant fabrics that are readily available in the market. However, not all of us can afford to just replace the ones that we already have in place. In line with that, let us take a look at different fire retarding methods and find out what is the right fire retarding solution for stage curtains & fabrics.

There are several suggested methods and chemicals to use when fire retarding a fabric, there are DIY chemical solutions using different “over-the-counter” products. Examples are Alum and hot water solution, Ammonium chloride and ammonium phosphate formula, and Borax formula. Tutorials show that all you need to do is mix enumerated ingredients and soak the fabric.

Then there is a premixed ready to use professional product like Rosco’s NF & SF solutions. Usage depends on the fabric that needs to be treated and since its premixed, it already has the right amount of everything so no dilution is necessary.

The important factor that we should consider though is if their effectivity has been proven. One might say, “there’s only one way to find out”. However, in this particular situation, we all hope that it doesn’t come to that point. This being said, even professionals would highly recommend going with a proven method and product that has been tested. Though its human nature that we always try to save and cut cost wherever we can, the little amount of saving isn’t just worth the risk.
