In a cinema context, fire-rated projection ports are openings in the wall or screen where the movie projector is mounted. The projectionist can access the projector from behind the screen or from a separate projection booth, which is typically located at the back of the theatre.

More generally, projection ports are building elements that allow pipes, cables, or ducts to pass through fire-rated walls or floors while maintaining the integrity of the fire rating. These apertures are intended to contain any fires that may break out within the duct or pipe, preventing them from spreading to other parts of the building.

FR Projection Ports are normally composed of steel or aluminium and have a fire-resistant seal around the port’s perimeter. They are tested to ensure that they fulfil stringent fire safety requirements, such as ASTM E814, and are rated depending on their capacity to withstand fire for a set amount of time. Installing FR Projection Ports in a structure is a critical step in guaranteeing occupant safety and minimising fire spread.
